IT entrepreneurs are good at solving problems. They define the problem precisely, gather data, choose a solution and iterate. This works brilliantly for technical challenges. Then they encounter challenges that cannot be solved this way.

Challenges with no single correct solution. Challenges that have names: burnout, isolation, a hollow relationship with family, loss of meaning, inability to delegate, constant reactivity instead of proactivity.

That is when coaching starts to make sense.

Why IT Entrepreneurs Delay Coaching the Longest

I have a theory on this. IT professionals are used to solving problems themselves. They are good at analysis, they have experience, and they know how to Google. When something doesn't work, they find the cause and fix it. Themselves.

But this mindset: I can handle it myself - is precisely what prevents accepting help when it is needed most.

In IT, self-reliance is a virtue. In personal development, it can sometimes be the biggest obstacle.

Second reason: IT founders see coaching as a "soft science". You don't want vision boards or writing gratitude in a notebook. You want concrete results, you want to know how it works, you want data. I completely understand this - because I was the same.

Good news: coaching that works for tech entrepreneurs is exactly this. Structured, results-focused, without the New Age trappings.

Typical situations where an IT founder seeks coaching

Do you recognise yourself in any of them?

None of these signals means you are a bad businessperson. They mean you are at the point where what has worked so far is no longer enough.

What coaching for business owners specifically addresses

1. Delegation and transitioning from operations to strategy

One of the most common topics. A founder who grew out of a technical role tends to do things themselves, faster, better, without "unnecessary communication". However, a company with this pattern only grows to a certain size before it stalls.

Coaching helps identify what specifically blocks delegation: Is it a lack of trust in the team? Perfectionism? Fear of losing control? Each has a different solution.

2. Work-life balance, or rather work-life integration

Balance" is an unfortunate term. It suggests that work and personal life sit on opposite sides of a scale. For IT founders who love their work, this isn't how it works: and it doesn't have to be.

Coaching helps you find boundaries that make sense for you. Not based on a productivity book, but according to your specific situation, values and what truly matters to you.

3. Insulation at the top

This is one of the least discussed problems faced by a founder: the higher you climb, the fewer people you have with whom you can speak openly. The team respects (or fears) you. Investors want to see certainty. Family does not understand the context.

A coach is someone in whose presence you don't have to play a role. The session is a space where you can say "I don't know", "I'm afraid" or "this isn't working for me": and then turn that into useful work.

4. Decision-making under uncertainty

IT thinking leans towards analysis. More data, more analysis, then a decision. But business reality is full of decisions where you will never have enough data. Coaching helps work with uncertainty: not to eliminate it, but to handle it constructively.

What business coaching looks like in practice

I usually work in blocks of 4-8 sessions, each spaced 2-3 weeks apart. Each session lasts 60-90 minutes, either in person or online.

We do not start with vision and values (unless that is what you want). We begin with a specific topic that is currently pressing for you. It could be a concrete decision, a situation within the team, or a recurring pattern that is troubling you.

During our collaboration, what lies behind it will become clear. That is where the interesting part happens.

I came here saying I can't delegate. I left realising that deep down I don't believe I deserve more free time. I never would have thought to analyse it like this. - client, IT founder, Prague

Why a coach with an IT background?

Not every coach needs to understand IT. But for many clients in the technology sector, it is a major advantage when a coach speaks their language, understands agile methodologies, knows startup culture, and knows what it means to be both CTO and founder in one person.

I have been on the other side of the table. And according to my clients, that makes a difference.
