The most common question I get: How do I know if coaching is the right step for me?

The answer is simpler than it may seem. If you are even asking this question, you are likely in the right place at the right time. But let us break it down specifically.

Koučink is not a last resort.

One of the biggest myths about coaching is that it is intended for people in crisis, as if coaching were a last resort before professional or personal collapse. The opposite is true.

The most effective coaching takes place when you have the capacity to work on yourself. When you are not overwhelmed by day-to-day operations to the extent that you have no room to stop and reflect. Coaching is an investment that yields the best returns during times of calm and development: not in chaos.

The best time to plant a tree was twenty years ago. The second best time is now.": Chinese proverb

It is the same with coaching: the best time to start was earlier. But now is also a great time.

7 signs that it is the right time

1
You stand at a crossroads and do not know which way to go. Change of job, new business, move to another sector, important decision about life direction. You have more options, but you lack clarity.
2
Do you feel stuck despite your best efforts? You work hard, but the results do not match the effort. It feels as though you are running in place. You intuitively know that the problem is not a lack of work.
3
Do you keep running into the same obstacles? Procrastination, team conflicts, inability to delegate, fear of public speaking. The pattern repeats in different situations.
4
Do you want to move up a level? You are functional and successful, yet you feel you have more potential than you are currently using. You want more, but cannot figure out how to achieve it on your own.
5
You need an impartial outside perspective. Family and friends are biased. Colleagues have their own agendas. You need someone who will listen without prejudice and help you see the situation clearly.
6
You have a goal but lack action. You know what you want, but there is a chasm between intention and realisation. You put it off, sabotage yourself, always finding a good reason to start next time.
7
Work-life balance is non-functional Work is encroaching on personal life. Or conversely, personal problems are hindering your work. You feel this cannot continue, but you do not know where to start.

When coaching is not appropriate

Honesty is the foundation of my work, so I will say this too: coaching is not suitable for every situation.

What coaching looks like in practice

One of my clients was a manager at a fintech startup. She came to me saying she was "fine" but wanted to be a better leader. She wasn't at a crossroads or in crisis; she simply felt she could do more.

Over six sessions we discovered that her communication style created a barrier between her and the team. No one told her, because they were afraid of her reaction. Coaching gave her the space to understand this and make changes.

Six months later, she received a promotion.

Are you ready? One-question test

If you want to know whether coaching is the right step for you, try answering one question:

If I knew what I don't know, how would that change my decisions and results?

If this question has caught your attention and you want to answer it, coaching is for you. If you found it unnecessary, you probably already have everything you need.

But I suspect you haven't stayed here yet.
